On Feb 15, 1956, Chief Minister of Malaya Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra laid the foundation stone of the Independence Stadium, Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. The stadium would be the first for the nation and would be the venue for the Proclamation of Independence. The 22,000-capacity stadium was designed by Director of Public Works, SE Jewkes, and built by the Public Works Department. Construction works lasted for one year and the stadium was ready in time for the joyous occasion on Aug 31. 1957

 
 
 
 
 
 

In 1949 a committee was formed to consider and formalise the establishment of a flag for the Federation of Malaya. A national-level competition was organised by the Federal Legal Council. A total of 373 entries were received from which three were short-listed.
